How to Make an Airsoft Target Box

August 26th, 2011 Comments off

Back in February, we published an article on putting together an electronic auto-reset target. While we understand that these are widely available, we decided to do a quick instructional on building your own airsoft target at home. In the quest for a simple DIY target, we opted to go for a target trap design. This design allows for the containment and possible reuse of BBs (depending on your gun type and personal opinion). We also went the video route and used our YouTube channel to make this a simple guide to follow. The materials used are easy to acquire and affordable. We hope you enjoyed this how-to guide and ask that you post your comments on YouTube as well as subscribe if you like this and other articles and reviews we offer.

Here are the paper targets used (you need to have Adobe Reader installed in order to view and print them out):

Blowgun Overview: Fidragon’s Shark Shooter

March 16th, 2011 Comments off

Got blowgun? We were recently surprised to discover that our main airsoft tactical gear manufacturer and supplier Fidragon also carries a full line of blowguns. Figuring that our customers might be interested, we decided to purchase a few and try them out. We finally settled for a short 24” model labeled as the “Shark Shooter” in Fidragon’s catalog. The following is a breakdown of our first impressions.

Shark Shooter

Out of the package our blowgun seemed to offer a good deal for the price. It came with a variety of different darts which we will analyze individually later on. The manual, although sparse, was in legible English which is considered a plus for Chinese products in this price range. The sling was a nice extra that came in handy when we had to carry the Shooter around outdoors or set it aside while retrieving darts.

Darts:

Sharpwire Darts

We were given a large number of these with enough spares to completely replace the ones already in use. They are fairly accurate and shorter than the spearhead darts. We were getting ¼” penetration in plywood with them.

Spearhead Darts

Although longer and heavier than the sharpwire darts, we still got decent penetration in our field tests with these. They make a great hunting choice as the expanded tip makes them less likely to come loose off the target. We were given no spares on these.

Spike Darts

Spike Darts

Short and stubby, these spike darts weren’t generally impressive despite their wicked appearance. We couldn’t get them to stick firmly enough in anything but carboard. Even with these shortcomings, we still think they add something to the overall aesthitic appeal of our mounted aresenal.

Stun Darts

Stun Darts

Well what can we say? They look like little orange fish… which may explain why Fidragon produces a model outfitted exclusively with this type of dart dubbed the “Guppy”. A shot at a neighborhood cat, however, elicited the desired effect. These fish bite.

Conclusion:

Our shot tests proved to be impressive. This little blowgun can pack a punch! We found that following Fidragon’s advice to use “short, sharp bursts of air” worked best when launching darts. Our accuracy, from a distance of 20 feet, was mediocre at best. However, we remain confident that we could achieve much better results with practice. If you are looking quick, inexpensive fun, you should definitely consider blowguning.

Electronic Auto-Reset Airsoft Gun Target

February 14th, 2011 Comments off

Every now and then we find the inherent desire to practice our shooting for the next big game. An indoor airsoft target provides not only a good way to sharpen your aim, but also serves as a back up during the long winter months promising plenty of rainy days. We start our exploration of indoor and outdoor shooting targets with an overview of the popular auto-reset target. We take you through the assembling process step-by-step.

1. Insert the batteries.

2. Attach the target heads. Our setup included two sets, square and round (pictured). Hitting the smallest one resets the targets.

3. Now that the electronic target system is ready to use, put the net together and position the targets inside. Don’t forget to turn it on!

4. You’re done. Isn’t it pretty?

5. Now you can switch to the alternative square targets if you wish or experiment with your different airsoft guns. Trying different rounds at varying ranges is a way to start refining your skills. Although this target works well with most airsoft guns, it is probably not recommended for your more powerful weapons (e.g. your $200+ sniper rifle). We will make future posts on other types of targets you can buy or make at home.

WWII Airsoft Gun Replicas

February 14th, 2011 Comments off

WWII marked a period of revolutionary transformations in gun technology. Up until that time, most guns still resembled their older muzzle-loading predecessors. Trench warfare had been used extensively in World War I and most guns manufactured during that time had no place in the mechanized battlefields of WWII. It was because of a need to fill a gap in contemporary gun technology that the guns of WWII emerged. The submachine gun was born and so were many other improvements made. Some airsoft gun enthusiasts have come to embrace this period of innovation by seeking to replicate its spirit with authentic airsoft gun replicas of WWII firearms. The availability of such airsoft guns tends to be limited in comparison to other genres such as modern weapons. The following are examples we have seen:

The M28 Double Eagle (WWII Pistol Replica):

M28 Airsoft Gun

M28 Airsoft Gun

This is a WWII styled airsoft pistol with a 25rd capacity magazine. The gun is spring powered and is made of plastic construction. It is 11” in overall length and is actually quite large for a pistol. The barrel rail adds a unique target pistol look to it. Unlike most airsoft pistols, cocking requires pulling a plug at the rear of the barrel rather than the usual slide. It shoots at about 200 FPS. It would make an interesting addition to any pistol collector’s set.

The M37F Double Eagle (Skorpion VZ. 61 Replica):

If nothing else, this airsoft gun should be acquired for its unique design. The M37F by Double Eagle features a wire folding stock and a 25rd capacity magazine. The bolt handle seen is pulled back to cock the gun. It measures 11” in length with the stock folded and 19” fully extended, is spring powered, and consists of plastic construction. It shoots at about 220 FPS. The Skorpion VZ. 61, which it replicates, was first manufactured in Czechoslovak during the early 1960s. Although originally intended for security forces, the VZ. 61 found mainstream use in the Czechoslovak Army. This machine pistol was the result of post-war innovations of the submachine gun. However, the assault rifle eventually became a more favorable direction in gun design following WWII.

The M40 Double Eagle (MP40 Replica):

This 28” (fully extended) spring powered MP40 replica from Double Eagle represents one of the more inexpensive options for buying this gun. The MP40 is widely copied for use in WWII recreations and airsoft MILSIM. AGM makes a full metal AEG model with a 330 FPS BB velocity rating. The example we used shot at approximately 220 FPS and was made of plastic. The lever handle on the side is pulled back to cock the gun and the stock can be seen in the folded position. The MP40 is truly the hallmark of German WWII submachine gun engineering. Its limited use in the war is one of the reasons that historians point out as the beginning of the end for Hitler’s regime. Popularized in many WWII themed films and video games, the MP40 is undoubtedly a first choice for many airsofters seeking the excitement of WWII replicas.
